Beethoven is perhaps the most famous musician of all time. Ever since his death in 1827, he has been a principal figure in the history of Western Music. His influence later on was so enormous to other composers, that it actually intimidated them. Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770, to a family of musicians at the royal court of Cologne. His name descended from his grandfather, who settled in Bonn in 1732. Both his father and grandfather were professional musicians who performed at the court of Elector. In the important town of Bonn. His first home was in a basement. He had to spend money for furniture, a piano, and clothes, in order to make a name for himself. Even if his sense of style was not on point, his talent and personality made up for it. Most of his income were gifts from aristocrats, where he held concerts. Later, money came from author’s rights – he managed to publish his works right from the start, which was not an easy thing at that time. In the first years of his stay in Vienna he raised the extra money he needed from public concerts and tours. He didn’t like to be a teacher; nevertheless he gave private lessons, especially to young aristocratic girls. Usually they took lessons until they got married, after which they almost completely abandoned them. Among Beethoven’s students there were also famous pianists, talented and distinguished ladies like Tereza Brunswik or Dorothea Ertmann. (Beethoven’s fame was growing by the day. Love, Lust, and Tragedy in William Shakespeares Romeo and...

Love is the forceful attraction between two people blossomed from desire and intimacy. Lust is physical manifestation of what many would call love, but in reality this feeling can bend the will of any man and woman alike. Lust is power, it is passion, and it can motivate. One thing love and lust has in common: they have the ability to kill. Thus tragedy strikes a wary, yet inevitable, sentiment every person experiences at least once in their lifetime. Love in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Everybody knows Romeo and Juliet are supposedly in love; many think otherwise. For example, this love story is a romance, a love on a path with death. Ferris Buellers Day Off free essay sample

Ferris Bueller is the type of kid who is always testing his limits during times he should not be. He knows exactly who he can pick on, it just so happens that the vice principal of his school, Mr. Rooney, is one of those people. On this particular skip day, Rooney, is on to him and his phony illness. Ferris had it made; out of school for the day with his best friend, Cameron, but that was not enough, he wanted more. He wanted Sloane. Ferris, being the sly genius that he is, devised a plan to make that happen. Moments later, Mr. Rooney receives a phone call (from who he believes to be Ferris impersonating Sloane’s father). While he is in the middle of threatening this man on the phone, he receives a call on the other line. Who could it be from? Well, Ferris Bueller of course. Once Rooney realizes that he just strung together some of the nastiest words the English language has to offer and directed them towards a parent, he is catapulted in to a long line of apologies. At this point, Rooney will do anything for this enraged parent so he does not lose his job. It is later discovered that the mysterious man on the phone asking for Sloane to be released from school was Cameron. Ferris’ plan was executed perfectly. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because it portrays all of the characters so perfectly. Ferris is a manipulative teenage boy who always seems to do whatever he wants and never gets caught. His best friend, Cameron, is someone who plays by the rules, because of his timid, dull lifestyle. These contradicting personalities prove to be beneficial to both characters throughout the course of the film. Vice Principal Rooney plays the role of the villain; he is trying to ruin Ferris’ skip day and force him to repeat his senior year. He has a very old school way of doing things, which does not clash well with Ferris’ ideal lifestyle. A perfect representation of all the characters in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off can be found in the Dark Knight Rises. Ferris is constantly doing whatever spontaneous activity he wants and always getting away with it, no matter the severity of the situation. Whether he is doing something as innocent as cutting class, or something as severe as claiming to be someone that he is not at the nicest restaurant in town, he always finds a way out. He is always pushing Cameron to live a little. While Cameron wants to sit in his room and complain about how sick he is, Ferris convinces him to come over and hit the town. In this respect, Ferris is very relatable to Bruce Wayne (Batman). They are both constantly pushing their admirers to be all that they can be. Just like Wayne is a mentor to John Blake (Robin), Ferris is a role model to Cameron. Although Ferris and Wayne are different in the way they handle situations (Ferris being mentally strong and Batman being physically strong), they are very similar in their willingness to give or help others, in a sense. Another similarity between Ferris and Batman is the fact that they both have a kind of second identity. When Batman is not out saving the world from the latest villain, he is Bruce Wayne. Wayne is a billionaire genius who requires a crutch to walk around. Ferris does not have as distinct of an alter ego, but he definitely acts different around various people. Around his parents, Ferris is an innocent little boy who is quite ill. They believed he could never hurt a fly. Around Cameron, Ferris is typically more spontaneous, because he feels he has to make up for what Cameron lacks. Around Sloane, Ferris is a sweet, loving boy whom she will one day marry. I really enjoyed Ferris’ character because he was entertaining to watch. I never knew what stunt he was going to pull next, and I thought that was hilarious. Cameron is the most relatable character in the movie, because he fits the description of Robin almost perfectly. Both characters are very unsure of themselves in the beginning of their respected movies, but towards the end they both show that they had changed into a man in their own ways. Cameron, at the very beginning, is a pathetic excuse for a man. He never takes any risks, never has any fun; he is living in constant fear of his father. Once Ferris convinces him to get out of bed and go have some fun, the transformation from boy to man has already begun. He becomes more easy-going and exciting as the movie progresses, although he remains reluctant to all of Ferris’ actions. The final transformation occurs at the end of the movie when they have the back of his dad’s prized car up on an axel, so they can take the miles off of it and not get caught. Once Ferris realizes that the miles are not coming off, he alerts Cameron. In a fury, Cameron kicks the car repeatedly, destroying the headlights and front bumper, until the axel becomes dislodged. Satisfied with the destruction he has caused, Cameron leans on the car in a content manor. This little bit of weight is enough to finish pushing the car off the axel, sending Cameron tumbling to the ground to watch as the Porsche shoots out of the second story garage into the untamed wilderness below. As the car lay in the bushes, completely destroyed, Ferris says that he will accept the blame, that it was his fault. Cameron declines his offer. With his rejection of the offer, Cameron was accepting the wrath that was his father’s anger. Cameron had officially become a man. I really enjoyed Cameron’s character, because he is the most relatable to me. Just a few years ago, I was a lost boy, much like Cam in the beginning. I did not know who I was or what I wanted to do with myself. Slowly, I started finding things that peak my interest. I got involved and took the initiative to find things for me to do. I had stepped up and become a man. Mr. Rooney is a very interesting character. He always thinks that he has Ferris with his back against the wall and nowhere to go, but Ferris always weasels his way out of it. Rooney’s persistence really tells a lot about him. The fact that he never gives up, even after being completely beaten, bruised, and used as a chew toy by the Bueller’s dog really shows just how much he hates Ferris. It shows that he really is an evil person, much like the character of Bane in Dark Knight Rises. Bane is hungry for power and he will not let anything stand between them. He will beat someone senseless if they even think about crossing him. Mr. Rooney, much like Bane, had a very old school type of masculinity about him. Both of these characters are very physical and take matters into their own hands. I did not care much for Rooney’s aggressive character. While he was a very funny person to watch, I did not understand why he did everything that he did. Some of his actions were just so far-fetched; it kept me from being too sucked in to the movie. Ferris’ character is also quite extreme, but I found him to be more relatable and likeable, primarily because of how close we are in age. Rooney’s character was the most irrational part of the movie, in my eyes. Jeanie is Ferris’ sister in the movie. She starts out a jealous character who has nothing to be jealous about at all. She has the reputation of being the bad kid of the family, in her parent’s eyes. In reality, the bad kid of the family is Ferris. He never gets caught doing anything that he could get in trouble for. However, anytime Jeanie does something bad, she gets caught. One can understand how frustrating this would become after many instances. I saw Jeanie as a character who is too busy wanting what Ferris has to ever be grateful for what she has. If she would just take a step back from the jealousy, she would realize that there are plenty of things she has that Ferris does not. For example, Ferris does not have a car while Jeanie does. Ferris got a computer for his birthday even though all he wanted was a car. He does not spend time worrying about things that other people have, because that can lead to jealousy. Instead, he is just living his life to the fullest. I prefer someone like Ferris more than Jeanie; she is too controlling and jealous for my taste. I found Ferris and his crew to be a quite hilarious team; they did everything they wanted and never even got caught. Although Cam will have to face his dad and tell him what happened, we can all agree that everything happened for the best regarding that; Cameron finally became a real man. I believe that anyone can find something humorous in this movie. Parents can relate to how mad Cameron’s dad is going to be when he finds out about the car, while the kids will giggle when Ferris takes over the whole parade; it truly is one for the ages.

Test 1 Essays - Characters In Hamlet, English-language Films, Film

Test 1 How does Horatio interpret the appearance of the ghost? Horatio interprets the appearance of the ghost as bad things will happen to the country of Denmark. The ghost appears to look like the dead king of Denmark in the armour he wore when he fought the King of Norway. Where is the University at which Horatio and Hamlet studied? Wittenberg What does young Fortinbras want to do? Young Fortinbras wants to invade Denmark, to honor the death of his father. In his soliloquy, what are Hamlet's reasons for objecting to his mother's marriage? Hamlet feels that his mother, Gertrude should have mourned for a longer period of time . Instead she remarries King Hamlet's brother, Claudius. Her urge to get in bed illustrates that she is greedy. In the beginning of the act who does Polonius send to spy on Laertes? His servant, Reynaldo. What does Ophelia tell her father? Ophelia tells Polonius that Hamlet has gone crazy. Hamlet enters her room as she is sewing; his clothes are disheveled, and his look is piteous. Why does Marcellus think Horatio should speak to the ghost? Marcellus thinks Horatio should speak to the ghost because he will know what to say to him. He is a "scholar" and is educated. He's also a great friend of Hamlet. What is the nature of the Player's speeches in Act 2? They tell of Priam's queen, who, when Priam is struck down by Pyrrhus, cries out in agony at her loss. What play does Hamlet ask the troupe to perform? Murder of Gonzago Identify Polonius, Laertes, Reynaldo, Ophelia, and Gertrude, from the play? Polonius: He is the Lord of the court and an advisor to King Claudius. He is also the father of Laertes and Ophelia. Laertes: The son of Polonius and the brother of Ophelia. He wants to go back to France. Reynaldo: Polonius's servant Ophelia: The daughter of Polonius, and sister to Laertes. Gertrude: The Queen of Denmark. She is Hamlet's mother. She married Claudius shortly after her husband died. She loves Hamlet. What is Polonius's excuse for Hamlet's behaviour, and why does he think this ? Polonius tells the king and queen, in a very roundabout way, that he has discovered Hamlet's foiled love of Ophelia, and that he believes this lost love to be the root cause of Hamlet's madness. Claudius asks how they might prove this to be the case. Polonius has a plan. He offers to loose Ophelia on Hamlet while he is reading alone in the library. Meanwhile, he suggests, he and Claudius could hide behind a tapestry and observe the meeting. Claudius agrees. Why does Hamlet look at Claudius with contempt? Hamlet refuses to recognize the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude( 1), He refuses to accept Claudius as King as he had taken the life of Hamlet's father. Why does Claudius not want Hamlet to go to Wittenberg? In Shakespeare's Hamlet , I don't believe that Claudius wants Hamlet to fore go his return to Wittenburg because he considers him a risk. Human nature is such that out of the company of his uncle and mother, Hamlet would adjust in time. Hamlet delivers a lengthily soliloquy at the end of Act 2 scene 2. Why is he so upset with himself? What plan does he come up w ith at the end of the soliloquy? In Hamlet's soliloquy at the end of Act 2, Scene 2, Hamlet is working through his internal struggle. He struggles with the inappropriate relationship between Gertrude and Claudius and laments over the fact that he has not done anything about it. He is essentially "beating himself up" over the fact that his only plan in dealing with this is to wait and let God be the judge of the incest between the two characters. Something is rotten in the State of Denmark. This line is spoken by Marcellus to Horatio. Marcellus is not just referring to things to come when he says that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark," but of things already visited upon them -- the ghost itself and the war with Norway. 2. During Hamlet's soliloquy, he uses a metaphor to say Claudius will corrupt

Moral Perplexity

Moral Perplexity Moral perplexity is an ethical dilemma that humans face every day when making decisions. In order to overcome this dilemma we use norms of moral conduct which consist of: laws, ends and responsibilities (Ring 98). Last week's tragedy forced our nation to face one of the greatest moral perplexities of all time. The greatest question that the nation needs to answer is "how is it going to retaliate and who is going to be punished?" In this paper I am going to use the three types of moral conducts to analyze the retaliation process. Last week's terrorist attack took many innocent lives and shook our economy. Terrorists responsible for these actions broke laws. American law system is based on the idea that one who breaks the law needs to be punished and punishment needs to fit the crime. This is where we run into an ethical dilemma. America has an obligation to punish those responsible for breaking the laws but we don't know how and who to punish.United StatesPeople that are more radical think that America should bomb every country that supports terrorism, on the other hand people that are against bloody wars think it would be better if we just send some ground troops to some countries in the Middle East, to show that we are not going to tolerate terrorism. I think that this is a problem of competing values, because no matter what the government decides to do, there are going to be casualties on both sides. President Bush is in a very difficult situation right now that deals with many moral issues. For instance is it moral to retaliate and kill more innocent people or is it moral not to, even though we have a responsibility to punish those responsible. When considering the ends type of...

Masculinities in the Television Series, Friends Essay

Masculinities in the Television Series, Friends - Essay Example I have looked into how Joey and Chandler mutually engage with each other, in what context this takes place, and what structures it. How does this relate to the 'real' world' Karen Walker discusses how men and women relate their behavior and conceptualize personal relations within cultural ideologies of relations (Walker: 126). Walker's argument is that most writers on friendships fail to grasp that there are differences between the (gendered) cultural ideologies and social reality. Cultural ideologies signify models and ideals that society and culture enforce upon the sexes. The depiction of Joey and Chandler may serve to counter work dominant ideologies of buddy relations representing homosociality. The concept of homosociality refers 'specifically to the non-sexual attractions held by men (or women) for members of their own sex.' (Bird: 120) Within this framework of interpretation, writers have acknowledged certain elements as vital to social interaction among men. Incapability of displaying emotions is one element, homophobia is another. Cultural norms are powerful in this sense, because they work as blueprints for how men and women perceive friendships are supposed to be (Walker: 126). She claims that few writers have noticed that we must theorize friendships (like all other gendered activity) within a cyclical framework where cultural ideologies inform gendered social interaction, as well as pay attention to how people merge and make sense of structuring elements and behavior. Far too often writers isolate the ideology of gender, and leave out the context and specific practice that people carry out. Men in their late 20s or early 30s usually defined masculinity as performance, which is, continuously reflecting upon their own personality, identity and behavior. Thus, they reflect what is referred to as by Anthony Giddens' that in 'modern society individuals are involved in an ongoing reflexive project of the self.' Giddens claims that people in the West are increasingly aware of a 'pure relation', one that enables one to know someone else fully and in to the most profound depth. Let's discuss how Joey and Chandler are clearly positioning themselves within the gendered ideologies of men's relations. They find it problematic to express emotional care and interest in each other since this opposes to what they know is socially acceptable for heterosexual men to do as partly due to heterosexual constraints on men's emotional presence (Joyrich 1996). There are significant differences between what we say and what we do, as Walker (Walker: 126) points out. She questions whether men's and women's same-sex friendships differ distinctively, disagreeing that men's friendships are motivated by activity, while women emphasise the importance of sharing feelings in friendships with other women. She reflects similar attitudes, finding a gap between the collective 'tough' masculinity, and the individual men's experiences and attitudes. Cultural ideologies were not powerful enough to disable the people she interviewed from making their own friendships in practice differ signif icantly from the norm. Walker contrasts these

Principles of Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Principles of Marketing - Essay Example ace’ component of the marketing mix this paper will discuss what distribution strategies are used in the industry, with an analysis of how much information is given during the adverts. Lastly this paper will discuss whether or not the adverts tell us anything about distribution and if the product utilizes a push or pull strategy. According to National Geographic (2010) the annual expenditures on cosmetics globally is approximately U.S. $18 billion annually. According to a study conducted by the UK based cosmetic store ‘Superdrug’ it is the case that 70% of women in the UK do not leave the house without makeup (Oneindia.com, 2010). Given the size of this industry and the demand for product there is little question that there are a number of different players have carved out a niche in the mascara industry. While the history of mascara may go back over a century, in the modern context some of the largest players in this market are L’Oreal, Revlon and Maybelline. Moreover, there are a number of smaller independent cosmetics makers that create niche products in the market such as Mary Kay. As it is the case there are different firms with different strategies it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what strategy is employed for each individual company. With aggressive strategies In terms of the promotion mix, advertising plays a very important role with the utilization of most media outlets such as television and radio adverts, billboards, in-store displays, direct marketing campaigns, web-content and even product placement. According to Peachey (2002) Revlon spent  £5m to play a pivotal part in the storyline of the American soap opera, ‘All My Children’ which frequently references the Mascara product offerings of the company. In the example of Mary Kay the company utilizes an aggressive ‘personal selling’ strategy so that an element of expert advice can be provided to help educate consumers of what product offerings can best meet the needs of the

A Scherzo A Shy Persons Wishes Analysis Essay Example for Free

A Scherzo A Shy Persons Wishes Analysis Essay What is the mood of A Scherzo A Shy Persons Wishes. How is the mood conveyed and what effect does it have on our understanding of the central message of the poem and the writers persona. How effective do you think the poem is? The mood in A Scherzo a Shy Persons Wishes changes and varies through the poem. Firstly the title has scherzo written which means briskly live music. This shows that the person is very lively but the poem doesnt show it, on the sunny wall out of tip-toe reach. As well tip-toe reach stands out because it shows it is close to going out. In the poem the word with and whisper is repeated through the poem which this shows alliteration. This gives a whisper feel through the poem which shows that its thinking quietly but title says he is lively. Plus there is internal alliteration. This makes the poem slow down and shows the person is anxious, With the nut in the shell, with the seed in the pod. The again shows that the poem has a lot internal alliteration. This poem has a flowing mood but lyrical at times. When its flowing its a calm mood like the person is describing the outdoors like it has never seen it, With the wasp in its inner most peach. The lyrical mood shows at times it is a lively showing it is lively which is why scherzo is used for the title, In the woodbines horn with the drunken bee. All this shows that the person is very lively but in a trapped ready to run out singing and shouting. Now I will talk about the persona. The poem shows a lot that the person is trapped in an area and cant get out no matter how close it gets to the outdoors, out of tip-toe reach. As well the poem shoes the persons claustrophobic showing its in a small area which probably shows why it a shy person on the outside but lively in the inside. The title shows this in a clever way because it first says scherzo showing it is a lively person, but then says A shy persons wishes which then explains that its shy but wants to change to a lively person in the outdoors singing and dancing. A quote to show its shy says to be crouched with the beast in its torrid layer shows its stuck in a dark hole but cant gat out. With the person being stuck he/she is bored which is not what a shy person is like when hes alone but he is. This shows he likes communicating and singing, quiet to lie, and dreamless to sleep. But then at times the person shows he is still a bit shy, With things that are timid, and shy, and free, the next line says Wishing to be, then this changes it all showing he is still shy. But at the end it says Anywhere, anywhere, out of this room! which ends it all saying the person wants to go out and not stay in its timid layer. All this shows a lively character with a bit of shyness left in him. The central message in the poem is shown clearly throughout the poem. The central message shows the felling of the person in a strong way. Firstly it talks about nature in a flowing way so it sounds like he/she is describing what it looks like outside. Throughout it continues to describe the outdoors. This gives a calm feeling to the person and shows what he wants to do when he goes out. As well this shows he thinks is lively. At line 26-29 he says he would be in any of the three examples he/she says and this is backed up by the last line which is Anywhere, anywhere, out of this room! shows that he wants to leave his shyness and become lively, and leave his dark hole behind.

Argument Against Gun Control :: Second Amendment The Right To Bear Arms

Gun Control is when you keep firearms plus guns away from people. Many people think that gun control is right because they think keeping people away from guns will reduce the amount of deaths each year. They also think that guns cause many of the deaths that had been committed each year. Also when ever people hear the word gun, the thoughts are of violence and negativity. Many people, myself included think gun control is wrong because we know that it is not necessary, since we know that guns were not involved in many of the deaths caused each year. While many other people disagree and think it is good because of the safety for people. In this essay I will tell you why gun control is unnecessary and why there shouldn?t be any gun control at all. There have been many gun control laws established throughout the U.S., but they vary from state to state. For example, in Colorado you can purchase any type of gun: handgun, machine gun, shotgun, rifle, automatic rifle, etc. at the age of 18, while in other places you would need a hunting license.1 I think this is unfair because when I?m at the age of 18 I would want to buy a gun, but I can?t because I?m living in California and another 18 year old could in Colorado. Also, another example is that in some states, they allow citizens to carry concealed weapons, while in other states citizens can?t. I don?t think this is fair at all because I think they should make laws that suits the whole U.S., and not make different laws in different states. Another reason that makes me think that they shouldn?t have different gun control laws in different places is because I knew a person that buys guns in New York, and some how got them over here and sells them to people by tripling the price. I have asked him how he got them over here, but he never told me how he did it. He told me that he has done this for many years until one time he got caught when he was selling them and was jailed for 6 or 7 months. If gun control laws were applied the same in every place he could of never have gotten the guns. This also means that criminals could have done the same thing that my friend had done, but not sell the guns but use them to do bad things.

China’s Terra-Cotta Army

In March of 1974, while drilling a well, a work brigade of farmers discovered a subterranean chamber nearby the royal tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Emperor of China (Encyclopedia Britannica). The superstitious old women of the village believed that the digging would disturb the Earth God. Therefore, due to these spiritual beliefs, they did not report the discovery right away. Eventually, archeologists came to Xi’an in droves to study and extend the digs. This led to the uncovering of three vast pits to the east of the burial tomb. In these pits, chariots, weapons and over 7,000 terracotta soldiers and horses were unearthed (Roberts p. 25). After extensive research, historians and archeologists concluded these terracotta soldiers were buried there to protect Emperor Qin (pronounced Chin) and his underground kingdom in the afterlife. Ying Zheng was born in 260 BC. He was a member of the Qin Dynasty and ascended to the throne in 247 BC at the age of thirteen. The Qin rule became the most powerful during the Warring States Period, a hectic, brutal, and unsafe time in Chinese history where the seven states were at constant war with one another. After conquering the rival states, King Zheng, ruling over a now unified state he called China, renamed himself Qin Shi Huangdi, the First Emperor (Man p. 28). Under Emperor Qin’s rule, China, which is a derivative of his name, was ruled by strict law. He was a cruel ruler who readily killed or banished those who opposed him or his ideology. He is notorious for burning virtually all the books that remained from previous regimes and burnt over 460 alchemists because they failed to provide him a life prolonging elixir. After many attempts on his life were made, including one from his own mother, Emperor Qin ruled with a schizophrenic mind (China’ First Emperor). â€Å"It was perhaps his insatiable desire for security in an uncertain world that drove him on. † (Man p. 28) Emperor Qin undertook many projects in his organization of China. He is accredited for connecting existing farming walls to defend his kingdom from outside barbarians creating the first adaptation of the Great Wall of China. He constructed an extensive network of roads and canals for travel and trade throughout his empire. Perhaps the two key changes that ensured the unity of Chinese culture were the standardization of currency and the written script (China’s First Emperor). One of his projects was the construction of his mausoleum at Mount Li, which took 700,000 workers an estimated 11 years to finish. It is believed to contain a model of his empire and includes rivers of mercury and booby traps, as well as many buried treasures and sacrificial objects. It is speculated that in order to guard its secrets, the workers who constructed it were also entombed. This is said to be one of the last examples of mass human sacrifice in Chinese history. Although the location of the emperor’s tomb has long been known, it has yet to be excavated (Roberts p. 25). Another of his projects, which was unknown until the 1974 discovery, was the three vast pits containing the terracotta army. The first pit measures 252 yards long, 68 yards wide and 16 feet deep. There are over 6,000 terracotta warriors and horses, of which 1,000 have been unearthed. The soldiers were assembled from separately kiln-fired sections of terracotta; the lower halves of the bodies are made of solid terracotta clay and the upper halves are hollow. The warriors vary in height ranging from 5’8† to 6 1/2’ tall. They were given individually detailed faces which were believed to be based on the faces of the Emperor’s actual soldiers. However, it has since been proved that all the soldiers are based on ten basic designs (Travel China Guide). The figures are assembled into a well-organized battle array composed of the infantry and cavalry. The vanguard bowmen include 210 foot soldiers divided equally into three lines. The cavalry and war chariot follow close in line, forming the main body of the battle formation. The foot soldiers are alternated with the chariots drawn by horses, lined into 38 columns. On both the northern and southern sides of the war formation stand 180 warriors which serve as flank guards. The rear guards are on the western end, with two lines facing east and another facing west. Some soldiers are armed with battle robe, and some are equipped with armor. The war formation is elaborately set in a line and is poised as if prepared for battle at any moment (Travel China Guide). The second pit is the most spectacular of the three. The combat formations are more complex, and the units of armed soldiers are more complete. There are over 80 war chariots, about 1,300 terracotta warriors and horses, and thousands of bronze weapons. It is here where the terracotta general, the kneeling archer and the warrior with a saddled horse were discovered (Travel China Guide). The third pit is believed by experts to be the command center for all the groups in the other two pits. The unearthed artifacts include 68 terracotta warriors, four horses and one chariot all arranged in a unique layout. Upon entering the pit, there is a passageway where the 68 warrior figures stand orderly along the two sides (Travel China Guide). During the excavation and repair work on the terracotta warrior figures, experts discovered many names carved or printed on the bodies of these figures. So far 87 different names have been recognized. They were found hidden in such places as the hips or under the arms of the terracotta warrior statues. Further research has shown that these 87 people were the master craftsmen, and that these craftsmen had assistants of their own. In all, it is estimated that about a thousand people participated in the making of the terracotta warriors (Travel China Guide). The compound was declared a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site in 1987. After more than two decades of work on the site, archaeologists in the 1990’s anticipated that it would take many more years, perhaps several generations, to unearth the remainder of the tomb complex. In 1978, the former French president, Jacques Chirac visited the Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses. He called the Qin warriors â€Å"the eighth wonder of the world†. From then on, the Qin terracotta warriors became famous all over the world. In the years since its discovery, the tomb of the terracotta warriors has become one of China's most important tourist destinations, drawing thousands of visitors to Xi'an each year (Encyclopedia Britannica). Emperor Qin’s terracotta army is a remarkable demonstration of the First Emperor's ambition to rule, not only in his lifetime but also in his afterlife.

Difficult position Essay

The play the crucible was written by Arthur Miller .The play was based on a hurricane of mass hysteria .The crucible has been adapted from true life events .The play shows the cry of witchery evolve and grow out of hand .Written by Arthur Miller based on personal problems which have effected his life .The McCarthy trials in which he found himself in an very difficult position, but also very similar to those of Massachusetts in Salem in the 17th Century. Miller used this play to show opposition to McCarthyism in which it was seen as Un- American to be a communist. Anti-communism was strongly encouraged .Thousands of Americans were accused and they were aggressively investigated and if you wanted to prevent yourself from paying a heavy fine you had to point the finger at someone else, he described this as â€Å"Quite crazy†. He was really interested by the strong correlation with Communism and the Salem witch hunt . And even went to Salem Massachusetts to research the witch trials. Arthur Miller in the play shows the significance of ones name and the value within it.  Abigail Williams a small girl created madness falsely accusing innocent people to seek revenge .She felt once Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife was dead she will have him all to herself she believes that John Proctor and her haven’t finished yet, from their previous affair .Accusing John Proctor of â€Å"Putting knowledge in her heart†. Accusing him of destroying her innocence by taking her virginity .So for a time when the church is suppose to be a big part in everybody’s life he knows it wont look good on his behalf .She has malicious intentions, initially intending to get Elizabeth killed .It started as dancing in the woods and drinking blood which was a supposed ritual. She had a real plan for everything to go haywire. John Proctor’s guilt over affair with Abigail makes his position uneasy because he is guilty of the very hypocrisy he scorns in others. It silences his voice to speak out. This adds tension because he’s craving to testify against Abigail. But initially doesn’t this also adds dramatic irony.  Giles Corey is very fearful and died due to this; a lot of tension was caused by this. Tension is caused by him not confessing or accusing someone else of witchery consequently encountering a slow and painful death. Forced to plead guilty by pressing heavy stones on his chest he died by being crushed under the weight of these many stones .A slow painful death made it aching to read about and curious to find out what was going to happen next. Stage direction enabled us to visualise what was going on, on the stage. As it amplified the scenes and tension was added because the bigger and better the stage direction meant the scene was more detailed.  Act 4 began with the isolation of a jail in Salem the stage direction tells us that Sarah Good and Tituba both in rags tells us they have been ill treated. There in darkness and light only seeps through the bars creating a depressing, sorrowful and gloomy atmosphere. Making the unavoidable more daunting .The iron bars symbolises that they are prisoners locked away from their basic human rights and the world. Dramatic tension is caused by the setting of the scene because their probably yearning to see the outside world. Instant pity is felt for them they have had to suffer the excruciating pain of being locked up for a long period of time. For a crime they did not commit.  Parris is fearful of the situation he finds a dagger outside the door. This adds suspense and tension it left the audience wandering for his future existence. It could have been done simply but it was really dramatic because the audience are clueless about who put it their and why. It could have been done simply. But the dagger in the door made it more dramatic and the scene was dark which made it more spooky it was a clear threat and meant his life was at stake. Abigail’s unexpected disappearance because of her unachievable goal puts more pressure on Parris. As he is also feeling gradually more isolated in the village. His congregation has also dropped in size .This heightens the tension because if Abigail’s disappeared without a trace her doings and the doings of the other girls who cried witchcraft will be questioned. Abigail does not want her name to be soiled it’s so important to her she is seen as a good girl â€Å"My name is good in the village I will now have my name soiled†. So she might have her doubts about everyone finding out the whole thing was a lie so the best thing to do was to runaway. Parris is also worried that he stole all his money  To change Proctors mind to confessing to witchcraft in order to save his life Elizabeth is required. She is heavily pregnant but she agrees but makes no promises Hale asks her to make him confess to witchcraft.

Commercial Compromise essays

Commercial Compromise essays Dependent on British goods for the survival of their agricultural economy, the Southern States strongly opposed any attempts by Congress to tax foreign and interstate imports. This was seen as a direct affront to the South as well as to states' rights in general. Those who believed in a strong, powerful federal government favored import duties because the money raised bolstered the national economy. As the United States was still a new nation, federal monies were needed to fund infrastructures. However, the American economy was still regional in the decades immediately following the War of Independence. The North became increasingly industrial in nature and was largely self-sufficient. Northern states did not rely on foreign imports as much as the southern states did at the time. However, the south had been practicing a plantation economy for centuries and to suddenly impose a tax would burden many southern plantation owners and business men and severely cut into profits. The south felt that this would place them at an economic disadvantage and that the north would be heavily favored in the federal government. Therefore, the issue of taxation became one of the most I support the views of the north for several reasons and propose an interesting solution to this issue. First, I believe that as a new nation, all states and all citizens must make an effort to join forces and one of the ways of achieving this unity is through economic interdependence. The federal government needs to raise money from some kind of taxes; without a national pool of money there would be little need for a national government. One of the most convenient and reasonable ways to raise federal funds is through import tariffs. Moreover, import tariffs encourage domestic production of goods. Except for those goods that absolutely cannot be produced a t home, most of our nation's supply should come f ...

Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction

Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction Scientists across several disciplines, including geology, biology, and evolutionary biology, have determined that there have been five major mass extinction events throughout the history of life on Earth. For an event to be considered a major mass extinction, more than half of all known life forms in that time period must have been wiped out. Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction Probably the best-known mass extinction event took out all the dinosaurs on Earth. This was the fifth mass extinction event, called the Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction, or K-T Extinction for short. Although the Permian Mass Extinction, also known as the Great Dying, was much larger in the number of species that went extinct, the K-T Extinction is the one most people remember because of public fascination with dinosaurs. The K-T Extinction divides the Cretaceous Period, which ended the Mesozoic Era, and the Tertiary Period at the start of the Cenozoic Era, which we currently live in. The K-T Extinction happened around 65 million years ago, taking out an estimated 75% of all living species on Earth at the time. Many people know that land dinosaurs were casualties of this major mass extinction event, but numerous other species of birds, mammals, fish, mollusks, pterosaurs, and plesiosaurs, among other groups of animals, also went extinct. Asteroid Impacts The main cause of the K-T Extinction is well documented: an unusually high number of extremely large asteroid impacts. Evidence can be seen in various parts of the world in layers of rock that can be dated to this time period. These rock layers have unusually high levels of iridium, an element not found in large amounts in the Earths crust but is very common in space debris such as asteroids, comets, and meteors. This universal layer of rock has come to be known as the K-T boundary. By the Cretaceous Period, the continents had drifted apart from when they were one supercontinent called Pangaea in the early Mesozoic Era. The fact that the K-T boundary can be found on different continents indicates the K-T Mass Extinction was global and happened quickly. Impact Winter The impacts werent directly responsible for the extinction of three-quarters of the Earths species, but their residual effects were devastating. Perhaps the biggest issue caused by the asteroids hitting Earth is termed impact winter. The extreme size of the space debris vaulted ash, dust, and other matter into the atmosphere, essentially blocking out the Sun for long periods of time. Plants, no longer able to undergo photosynthesis, began to die off, leaving animals with no food, so they starved to death. Its also thought that oxygen levels declined due to the lack of photosynthesis. The disappearance of food and oxygen affected the largest animals, including land dinosaurs, the most. Smaller animals could store food and needed less oxygen; they survived and thrived once the danger passed. Other major catastrophes caused by the impacts included tsunamis, earthquakes, and possibly increased volcanic activity, yielding the devastating results of the Cretaceous-Tertiary Mass Extinction event. Silver Lining?   As horrific as they must have been, mass extinction events were not all bad news for those that survived. The extinction of the large, dominant land dinosaurs allowed smaller animals to survive and thrive. New species emerged and took on new niches, driving the evolution of life on Earth and shaping the future of natural selection on various populations. The end of the dinosaurs particularly benefited mammals, whose ascendance led to the rise of humans and other species on Earth today. Some scientists believe that in the early 21st century, we are in the middle of the sixth major mass extinction event. Because these events often span millions of years, its possible that the climate changes and Earth changes- physical changes to the planet- that we are experiencing will trigger the extinction of several species and in the future will be seen as a mass extinction event. Leagile Manufacturing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Leagile Manufacturing - Essay Example The paper throws light on the concept of Just in time was introduced to reduce the cost of the overall production by reducing the waste in the process. The reduction in the waste associated with the production process decreased the unnecessary cost of storage and maintenance which also contributed in the overall decrease of the cost of the production, besides, concept of Just in Time was aimed to reduce the involvement of high proportion of its working capital towards the stock as Just in Time involves the ordering of stock only when required. Considering the advantages of the Just in Time technology, the vice president of the organization, Scott Murphy, decided to implement the system in order to provide the organization with an effective edge in respect of its competitors. However the implementation of the Just in Time environment emerged to be a failure for the organization, and problem was encountered in almost every aspect of the business. After the new system was implemented in the organization by Scott Murphy, the organization found out that instead of reaping benefit for the organization, the new system is causing hindrance in the productivity to a large extent and there have been complaints from every sector of the business, and also gave rise to the dissatisfaction among various section of the employee. The purchasing department of the organization was highly dissatisfied with the process. According to the words of the purchase manager, an increase in cost emerged after the new system was implemented in the organization.... izations spend a huge amount of money towards the protection of the inventory and its maintenance, and also suffers a threat from the loss, if the inventories are not used due to economic fluctuations or due to the change in taste and preference of the customers. But Leagile manufacturing’s main problem arose with the start of the ordering for the material when on need. The costs associated with the purchase orders are significant and the overall cost of the purchase orders increased to a large extent as frequent orders were placed for the purchase of materials. Apart from the problem of the rise in cost of the purchase, the organization faced a significant problem with that of the frequent change in schedule for the order. As the stock of the inventory was calculated on a regular basis, so the schedule of orders were also changed accordingly and caused significant amount of trouble. However the problem associated with the process of production can be identified in the failure of the organization in determining the right amount of the inventory required for the production. If the process of the identification of the right amount of product would have been done in a proper way, then the case of shortage of material in the process of production would not have occurred and the production people would not have asked for the next day delivery of the material for the change in the schedule. As a result of the failure to deliver the right amount of raw material in time, the overall production process was hampered and even caused a lag in the production. The Just in Time incorporated in the organization was successful in reducing the inventory cost but the associated cost increased the overall cost of the production. The incorporation of the just in Time technology also

Your main task is to formulate an Information Systems (IS) strategy Essay

Your main task is to formulate an Information Systems (IS) strategy for an organisation of your choice. You then need to compile a concise report detailing your IS strategy - Essay Example It offers consumers great values by guaranteeing business a minimum number of customers, if a certain number of people sign up, then everyone gets the Groupon offer. If that minimum isn’t reached then no one gets the offer. The business process starts with the business owner or the retailer. The business owner will agree to provide his primary products or services at a set discounted price compared to retail value. Then the local daily deal is displayed at Groupon website. Then buyers will pay for the deal. If a certain number of people sign up for the offer, then the deal becomes available to all, if predetermined minimum is not met no one gets the deal that day. Goupon then collects the payment if the deal is valid and splits the revenue with the seller. Because groupon model encourages first time customers to partitioned business by offering services at 50 percent less than retail prices, the business owner will experience low or negative profit margins when they offer discounted products and services. They then have to set a ceiling on the amount of vouchers issued to limit their loses. Goupon gives half the payment to the seller and remains with the other half. This is how Goupon earns its revenue from the sales it acquires daily and the payment to the seller is broken down into instalments over life cycle of a deal loading Groupon with negative working capital. The Groupons mission is to become the operating system for local commerce. The business strategy has been discovering a business model that brings the power of the internet to local commerce .the business model has allowed the company to connect with millions of consumers and hundreds of people. Groupon has a number of contributions by facilitating trade and benefiting its seller and buyers. First by facilitating trade it brings together small sellers and individual

Tax Office Operation Transformation Essay Example for Free

Tax Office Operation Transformation Essay Governments of developing countries are constantly scrambling to raise the revenues required to finance higher service demands expected by their citizens and the infrastructure (economic, social and environmental) that will enable them to grow the nation towards being industrialized. And to sustain the all imperative comparative advantage over neighbouring nations. Taxation revenues continue to be the main source of revenue for Government spending. This in turn requires well-designed tax policies (new taxes and tax reform) that are translated into clear legislation and are administratively feasible. Perhaps the greatest challenge facing these countries is to improve the effectiveness of their tax administrations.[1] Common Challenges Tax Administrations in developing country contend with the same range of challenges with developed nations, although the significance of typical collection issues may be greater. As a result these countries suffer significant losses in revenue collection. Introducing tax initiatives such as self-assessment and GST does alleviate the revenue leakages to certain extent, however the agencies capacity and capability to administer an effective and efficient taxation system is the ultimate determinant to maximizing collections. It has longed been realized that the existence of widespread tax evasion as part of the hidden economy is a critical concern to developing countries, as it is with developed nations. Hidden income can be defined to include legitimate earnings which are hidden actively or passively to evade tax, as well as illegal earnings derived from non-lawful operations and services. Without trivializing the complexity in dealing with the later type of evasion, the taxpayer’s perception of the administration influences their obligation behaviour. It’s more so evident in developing countries where the administration may not be seen by taxpayers as service organization nor as an active enforcer. For example, common trends include: Â  Inability for taxpayers to get information from or transact with the agency, either low responsiveness, inconsistent advice, multiple hand-offs, huge queues at the service counters etc. Assessments and refunds taking months to process, often taking over six months to make a refund No urgency for Taxpayers to get registered, especially with small to medium enterprise and self-employed Lodgments and payments not pursued actively by the agency, often resulting in over 30% of non-filers Accumulating Debt not pursued in a timely manner by the Agency. Over the years can amount to considerable loss in non-recoverable debt (ie. timing issue). Low level of compliance actively, in terms of education and enforcement. Taxpayer being audited is seen as just bad luck. The Problem The common complaint of the developing country’s tax administration is the lack of resources. In terms of priority, these agencies are more focused on transaction processing activities which are largely manually driven. They are constantly bogged down dealing with never ending processing back-logs, including low turn-around in assessments, refunds, audit cases, appeals, rulings and so on. A large portion of the administration’s staff would be devoted to these low-value activities, which actually does not grow the revenue. The executive management of these administrations is well connected to the best-practices being adopted elsewhere, and understands the positive application to their own environment. They are challenged by the expected rate of change imposed on their agency, constantly battling the needs of Government to collect more and implement new policies quickly, at a lower operational cost. Taxpayers who demand the same levels of services they come to expect from the commercial sector Employees who are frustrated no having the revenue-agency tools to deliver superior services or for effective compliance enforcement. In this hast to modernize the tax agency often turns to automation and Information Technology as the savior and try to implement large amounts of innovation in a short period. As examples, interactive internet service, imaging for data capture, data warehouse, mobile audit workbench, IVR/CTI. All of these are essential IT enablers for the business; however, they often fall short of delivering the benefits in improving service and compliance enforcement in developing countries. The solution Lesson learnt elsewhere tell us that certain characteristics of an agency are central to support business innovation (new ways of doing business) using IT. Without these characteristics, the agency would cripple its efforts to modernize. These characteristics are: Having the building blocks for tax processing, Registration, Lodgment, Payment and Policing. High level of data quality Effective Change Management ability Building Blocks for Tax Processing The main functions of a tax administration, in dealing with taxpayers, aside from actual tax collection or sanctioning non-compliance, largely involve gathering and processing information. The four interrelated blocks are: Registration: Identify potential taxpayers and register taxpayers. Each taxpayer would be identified via a tax identification number and contact details are maintained. This information is core all business activities and imperative to maintain accurate and completed details. Lodgement: Capture, quickly process and record information to assist taxpayers in meeting their tax obligation. Non-lodgment needs to be managed [1] Developing The International Dialogue on Taxation, A Joint Proposal by the Staffs of the IMF, OECD and World Bank, 13 March 2002.

The Minutes Pass :: Personal Narrative, Autobiographical Essay

The Minutes Pass I sit at a round desk for eight hours eight bucks an hour and doodle. The phone rings once or twice every few hours (if I’m lucky, that is) and the population of people over 50 seems to rise by the minute. I sit with my legs crossed, sandal-less, wearing â€Å"work† shoes and my â€Å"work† smile. I enjoy the company I find myself in, even if it is a good book and a nice thought of myself at the beach. So I play tunes in my head, sing songs of glory under my breath, even snack on crackers when my stomach grumbles. Right now I’ve got â€Å"Riders on the Storm† playing along in my head Riders on the storm riders on the storm Into this world we’re born into this world we’re throw It’s kinda funny, seeing as how among the massive song files the Doors have recorded, I usually find this one to tickle my fancy the least, though always hear it up on the radio, overplayed in time. I mean don’t get me wrong - great song, better than most - but as far as the Doors go, I find the song rather mundane. It has become accepted by the public, merely because it’s too far out of grasp for ordinary people to actually determine its true and logical meaning. Of course, they’re all oblivious to this. Only true Americans, and maybe some Europeans, can come to some sort of conclusion within themselves about the truth in things of small importance. Europeans I say, because they live within their culture, see the past and their history. Most Americans on the other hand, live in the present, see only BIG and eat at McDonald’s. I say â€Å"Americans† because we’re the home of the free, the home of the brave, all that good stuff. Every other country looks up to us for one reason or another – we are the Mother country. Only it takes a true American to actually comment on the facts that really come into play while living in an unmistakable society. I mean kids are still hungry, households are disrupted, yet there’s a working world out there for us all. Jobs should be out there, and I think they may be.

Comparison Essay between the Narrative of Mary Rowlandson

A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson (Rowlandson, 1682/1996) The setting was New England. The English had established settlements in the Eastern board of the present-day United States to expand England’s trade routes in the Americas. The expansion was accompanied by mass conversion of Indians, whom the Europeans regarded as savage or uncivilized heathens. The missionary work though of Puritan pastors in New England was generally unsuccessful. The Indians associated the spread of new diseases   and dissension with Christianity. The Puritan pastors were not prevented from preaching Christianity to the Indians because of military support from the colonial government. In 1675, Wampanoag Chief Metacomet became overcritical of the English over the issues of encroching tribal lands and of course, the preaching of Christianity. He launched a series of raids in New England and captured many prisoners. One of them was Mary White Rowlandson, a wife of a Congregationist minister, and mother of three children. Mary Rowlandson became a prisoner of the Indians for several months. She and her children, while at captivity, were forced to work as members of the tribe. They were ransomed and freed before the end of the war. During her captivity, she wrote a narrative depicted her life as a prisoner of war and member of a tribe. Rowlandson’s narrative depicted first amd foremost the beliefs of the Puritan missionaries. Most of the Puritans in New England lived areligious and humble life. Because of their desire to convert the Indians, they were drawn to the wilderness and the â€Å"wild natives† who inhabit it. This mixture of piety and adventure affected Puritan literature. The Puritans were portrayed as the pious servants of God, the Indians the prospect hostile Gentiles. In many passages of Rowlandson’s narrative, the Indians were depicted as cannibalistic and enchanted. Thus, the narrative of Rowlandson served as a moral guidance to the English Puriatn reader, a form of unwavering salute to God. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Douglas, _/1999) The life of an American slave during the colonial and pre-Civil War America was miserable and degrading. The distance between the white man and the African was so intense that even african language was discriminated. In addition, the increasing complexity of American economic life demanded cheap labor. Here, the Negroes served the purpose. There was no magnanimity on the part of the English and later American settlers to the Negroes. They were seldom treated as human beings. In this narrative, Frederick Douglas showed the sufferings of the Negroes on rational and economic terms. Douglas treated discrimination as a form of social ill experienced by the Negroes. He argued that the properties of the whites were built on slave labor, a form of economic backlashing. In his commentary on slave songs, he maintained distance between himself and slavery. In reality, he did not understand the meaning of the songs although he was a slave. Thus, he interpreted all slave songs as laments. Here, Douglas made an error when he said that all slave songs were born out of hatred and ill comfort. In essence, many of the slave songs were songs of joy, work, and adventure. The physical and social depravity of the Negroes forced them to enjoy work as it may deem fit. The adventures of their ancestors in Africa were told with gestures of joy and respect; a form of cultural appraisal. Thus, when Douglas assumed himself as the mediator between the white and the Negroes, he himself embraced both cultures as if no essential defects were visible. Here, unlike Rowlandson, Douglas played as an objective narrator. References Douglas, Frederick. 1999. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave. Oxford; Oxford University Press. Unique Examples of National Pride

Unique Examples of National Pride : In the first story I read â€Å"Cathleen Ni Houlihan† (which was actually an amazing story! ) I felt that before the OLD WOMAN came the family was kind of selfish and greedy (with the whole money thing) and when the OLD WOMAN came they changed and they became instantly unselfish and not greedy they wanted to help her out.And later in the story the OLD WOMAN changed everyone’s prospective at life including Michael who is getting married to Delia and then he totally forgot that he was getting married to her just because the OLD WOMAN changed his way of looking at things including his marriage. And the OLD WOMAN told them how many people died just for her and to get her lands back(Irish). And she had much Pride into getting her lands back and fighting the Irish for taking it. The second story I read is â€Å"Address to General William Henry Harrison† The main guy in the story, Shawnee had very much respect for his country. He said he would do anything for his country ! And he argued with his brother about being better then what he was acting selling the country and then Shawnee said â€Å"Why not sell the air, the great sea, as well as the earth? Did not the Great Spirit make them all for the use of his children? † The Red People wanted to take over they’re country and Shawnee’s brother seemed like he wanted to sell the country because he didn’t want to fight for his country. Then Shawnee brought up Jesus dying on The Cross for us.Then he told his brother â€Å"Everything I have told you is the truth. The Great Spirit has inspired me. † How the two are the same or compared†¦ They both had pride and sacrifice for the things they stood up for. They loved there country so much they would die for it. And in the two stories I found that they are very much alike because the. OLD WOMAN and Shawnee are a like they both fought for what the believed in and for there country. They both wanted freedom and they both inspired another person to fight in the war beside them.
